EPA Compliant Lead Paint Abatement and Mitigation

Lead Painting has become more and more of a concern for the residential community.  While we do provide lead painting removal we wanted to provide some general information about lead paint.  This is not to be taken as professional advice as every situation may vary, however,  Orlando Painting wanted to provide this information because many concerned parents would call us to ask questions.  While you can do your own research on the EPA’s website we hope our website can provide some insight into lead painting.
Almost every structure built prior to 1978 has the ability to contain dangerous lead paint.  Lead paint has been known to cause serious health risks to individuals.  In light of the dangers lead paint impose to human beings the EPA has been making strong efforts to ensure people’s safety.  They have created new mandatory regulations that all renovation, remodel, and repair contractors who remove more than five square feet of lead paint replace windows where there is existing lead paint, and/or do demo on a structure become Lead Certified by mid April of 2010.
We are going to be honest with you that lead paint removal is costly.  If your home does have lead paint and you are planning to remove it make sure you obtain a Lead Certified painter.  Otherwise you are putting their workers, your workers, and/or your family at an unnecessary risk.  The certification course teaches these painting contractors the correct and incorrect way to remove lead paint.  It is a tedious process, but it is an important one.
If you found your way to this page you are probably concerned employer, employee, homeowner, and/or parent.  Therefore, let us start with some basic information.
Where is Lead Paint Found?

  • In building structures that were built and painted prior to 1978
  • Soil
  • Drinking water

How can it harm you?

  • When you are dealing with buildings painted prior to 1978 the lead paint can harm you if you ingest paint chips and dust from deteriorating pain.
  • Soil may have lead that may be harmful if the soil catches paint from the building structures.
  • Drinking water may have lead in it if your house was plumbed with lead pipes, the utility line connected to your house.  It is important not to boil the lead as this actually increases the lead content in the water.

Please note that these are only a sample of the areas the lead can be found and the harm it may bring to you.  To learn more about lead paint you should really visit the EPA website on lead removal.
We feel that being proactive with issues such as lead paint is better than being reactive.  It is important for adults to be aware of lead paint for their safety but it is more important for them to know so they can better take care of children and pregnant women.
Therefore, let us discuss how children and pregnant women can obtain lead in their bodies and how it affects them.

  • Obtaining Lead
    • If you touch an object with lead paint and it covered with lead paint dust be sure to wash your hands immediately.  Otherwise if you put in your mouth you are ingesting led.
    • Taking paint chips from the ground or home/building and eating them
    • If there is dust around the home due to remodeling and you or child inhales you are ingesting lead.

Therefore, by our samples above if you do anything which causes you or your child to ingest or inhale lead paint it may cause you harm.  Please note that children are able to absorb more lead because their bodies, brain, and nervous system is still developing.

  • Effects of Lead Paint
    • Children if there are high levels of lead which are not addressed early
      • Damage to body (including slower growth), nervous, and brain system
      • Behavior and learning disorders
      • Hearing problems
      • Headaches
      • Etc.
    • Adults
      • Reproduction activity in men and women
      • Nerve disorder
      • Pain to the muscle and joints
      • High blood pressure and hypertension
      • Nerve disorder

Please note that these are samples of effects and are not all defects.  Additionally, effects may vary on a case per case basis.  It is also important to note pregnant women can pass lead poisoning on to their baby while they are pregnant.
